HCL is shortlisted as Business of the Year in LACA awards

June 12, 2017 10:02 am

We are delighted to announce that HCL is one of only three catering companies in the UK to have been shortlisted in the Business of the Year category of the national LACA (Lead Association for Catering in Education) Awards for Excellence 2017.

The LACA National Awards, which will be announced next month, acknowledge individuals and teams who continue to make a real difference in education catering.

Lin O’Brien, our Chief Executive said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious award which not only raises our reputation but also that of the schools we work with. There’s a golden thread of passion, drive and commitment to delivering service excellence that runs through HCL and our dedicated team is the key to our current success and future aspirations.”

HCL’s award submission focused on its substantial successes in the last year, which included an increase in turnover of 5% to £36m and securing 18 contracts to deliver services over the next 3 and 5 years. We’ve seen increases in the number of meals being served in primary schools in the last year and students in secondary schools are spending more on the healthy food we provide on-site – the average spend per student has risen by 12.2% in the last year. HCL provides catering for 94% of all schools in Hertfordshire and last year served more than 15 million meals.

Our submission also showed how we have thrived since branching out from Hertfordshire County Council by becoming a limited company in 2013. The council retains 100% of the shareholding and this year we will be returning a dividend to the council as shareholder, making an important contribution to the council’s funding of vital front line public services in Hertfordshire.

Owen Mapley, Director of Resources at Hertfordshire County Council and shareholder representative, said: “I commend HCL as an exceptional, growing and well run business that has kept the needs of the users of its services at the heart of their thinking and operations.”
